THE SENIOR MEN'S CLUB OF NEW CANAAN

Regular meeting of February 2, 2001

President Hunziker opened the business meeting at 9:59 with 143 members present. Current membership is 498 with 2 invitees plus 24 waiting. No guests or new members attended.

People: Don Freud reported that Ed Codel is at Waveny and Huck Wood is receiving therapy. Frank McGarey recounted the details of his enrollment in the V .A. Healthcare Program, this being a timely sequel to the presentation of our speaker last week on the V .A. program in CT.

Activities: Bowling, bridge and paddle continue. Racquetball attendance unfortunately hit zero this morning, so a moratorium has been declared until March 1st, after which a few good men will be sought to join this exclusive group. Phil Toll has yet another new mystery restaurant ready for 4-F's on the 23rd. He has not found a co-chair, which is not surprising since he remains vague on the subject of a signing bonus and has said nothing about deferred compensation.

Other News: Don Hunziker reported that the annual meeting will be April 27th, rather than the usual first Friday in May. We need volunteers for the "clean your mile" program, being run by the C. of C. Next year we are in charge, so this is good practice. Pete Luke and Walt Hoffman reported on the excellent interim results the Senior Men have achieved in the Y's capital campaign. However, only 48% of us have so far subscribed, and much broader participation is needed to get us to our newly added goal: to fund the new elevator at a cost of $150,000.

Jester: John Berg reveled in his Super Bowl pool winnings and then expounded on various aspects of the number two, as in 2 Mercedes and 2 million dollars and related measurements.

Couth: Ron Seger asked for expressions of interest in a one week Bermuda cruise, to depart around the end of May. Programs for February and March are as reported and sold out. Some space remains for the U. N. April 19th, and the Botanical Garden May 17th. Details next week for Mystic Seaport in June.

Speaker: Joe Elmlinger introduced our New Canaan neighbor and his former colleague William Parrett, who is Managing Partner - Americas of Deloitte & Touche Tohmatsu. Like its direct competitors, DTT is a global colossus, serving clients like GM and Boeing; it employs 100,000 with $12 billion in billings. This is 5 times 1990 and 50 times 1967, when Bill joined the firm out of college. DTT's range of activities include the historical audit function, now 30% of sales; consulting, a postwar addition now 25%; and advisory functions, which started with taxes and now include 100 different services. Mr. Parrett listed four main themes as today's challenges: .
