Botanical Garden is full, and 6/20 is the Goodspeed Opera House to see "Brigadoon".
Jester: Jester of the day, Lorry Koch, told us a story about a mayor of Dublin who at a
party had a few too many and suddenly found himself quite confused distinguishing a
Cardinal from an alluring young lady.
Speaker: Vice President Bob Witt introduced Dr. Edward Schuster, a cardiologist from
Stamford who told us how to live to 100 without getting sick. Dr. Schuster's speech
first covered the genetic portion of this subject, emphasizing good genes and family
health history is extremely important in longevity. If one does not have these good
genes, in a few years from now a simple blood test will show this fact, and the bad
genes will be altered. If not altered, at least preventive steps can be taken. The
second part of Dr. Schuster's presentation covered the real life every day causes of
heart attacks. One contributing factor is diet, and he highly recommended the "Mediterranean
Diet" which is big on fruits and vegetables, fish and chicken, nuts, olive and canola oils,
and "booze" which acts as a blood thinner. Two drinks of any kind of alcohol are suggested.
Other facts were: sex is good, stress is bad. Exercise is good, overweight is bad.
Certain physical tests are good, vitamins are questionable. Aspirin is good, Cholesterol
pills also good if needed. Finally Dr. Schuster touched on the subject of defibrillators,
their importance, and actually donated one to the YMCA. He finished off by telling us not
to have a heart attack in New York City, better to have one in Seattle, and best to have one
in a casino, because "Big Brother" is watching you, so response time will be fast. Just keep
rolling those "Snake Eyes".
