Resident Commentary: Waif Hoffman read a moving article by Leonard Pitts Jr.,
a columnist for The Miami Herald. Mr. Pitts articulated in no uncertain terms
that the perpetrators had miserably failed to make us respect their cause, to
make us fear, or to tear us apart. President Hindenach then asked Joe Sweet to
lead the members in singing God Bless America.
SPEAKER
Vice President Ron Seger, introduced Dan Tully, a member of the Board of Directors
of Stamford Hospital. In his opening comments, Dan mentioned that FEMA and the
State of Ct. asked Stamford Hospital to receive patients from the terrorist attack.
Five injured victims were treated. He introduced six gentlemen who accompanied him
and are actively involved with Stamford Health Foundation. The new Stamford Health
System (SHS) facility is scheduled to open in 2002. Tully thanked several SMC
members for their generosity and support to Stamford Hospital. He equated the
objectives of the SMC to those of SHS, noting an exception, that SHS will provide
quality health care with no limits on membership. The SHS focus shifts from acute
care to a total health care perspective. SHS is becoming a model for the new
direction of medicine and health care. It will offer programs to detect disease
and disability, high quality hospital care, rehabilitation and home care, and
hospice care. Dan showed a video depicting a 21 st century landscape for health
care in our community. He emphasized the importance of our support for this
vision and the need of financial contributions to the SHS in order to attract
the best people, have the latest equipment, create attractive convenient facilities,
and offer class programs and services. He closed by saying that we all have our
individual charities to support, but this is the only one that touches and serves
us all.
